Kamala Harris
Kamala Devi Harris, born October 20, 1964 is a prominent American politician as well as a lawyer. She is currently the 49th vice president of the United States. She is both the first female vice president and the highest-ranking female official in the United States. She is a senator and former senator from California. Harris was born in Oakland and graduated from Howard University, University of California, Hastings College of the Law. Her career began in the Alameda County District Attorney's Office. Harris was later recruited to the San Francisco District Attorney's Office. In 2003, she was the San Francisco district attorney. In 2010 Harris was appointed Attorney General of California and then re-elected in 2014. From 2017 to 2021, Harris was the junior United States senator for California. Harris defeated Loretta Santiago in the 2016 Senate election making her the second African American woman to serve in the Congress, and the first South Asian American American to be elected to the United States Senate. As a senator, Harris advocated for health care, federal de-scheduling and the legalization of cannabis as a pathway to citizenship of undocumented immigrants, and the DREAM Act which bans assault weapons. She gained a national profile for her provocative questioning of Trump administration officials in Senate hearings, which included Trump's second Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh who was accused of sexual assault.
